ITV expands DTT presence
|
| Added 16th February 2008 ITV is to take advantage of its capacity on the DTT network with an expansion in hours for both ITV4 and CITV. The male skewing ITV4 is to extend its hours to become a full 24-hour service. It has in its sights Dave, UKTV’s rebranded UKTV G2, which also targets the male audience. ITV4 will benefit from an increased programming budget as ITV tries to make up for the fragmentation of audiences as ever increasing numbers upgrade to digital services. ITV4 currently shares its capacity with CITV, the children’s channel, which is now the primary outlet for kids programming on the network. Interest groups have welcomed CITV’s own increased budget that will allow the channel to commission its own programming for the first time. CITV will now move to capacity on the former SDN multiplex, acquired two years ago by ITV, and previously leased to the now defunct ABC1. It will also commence a daily 12-hour schedule. - Source Broadband TV News |
Setanta open to bidders
|
| Added 16th February 2008 Setanta Sports has confirmed it is prepared to consider offers for the pay-TV company that has sought to break Sky’s hold over TV sport. City investors have indicated groups including BT, ITV and ESPN have made bids. The Disney-owned sports company must surely present the best fit for Setanta, given the partnership enjoyed over NASN, expected to be rebranded later this year. Staff have been told by founders Leonard Ryan and Michael O’Rourke that the company has regularly seen speculation on a possible buyout, but has not been formally put up for sale. They said investment bank Goldman Sachs, which is also a shareholder, would advise on the matter. Setanta’s other investors include a consortium of private equity houses led by Doughty Hanson and Balderton Capital. - Source Broadband TV News |

14 million homes watching UK DTT
|
| Added 26th November 2007 Freeview, the marketing brand of the UK’s DTT platform, has announced it is now available in 14 million homes. It underlines recent figures from the UK regulator Ofcom that suggest 80% of people converting from analogue are opting for the UK DTT platform. Ilse Howling, general manager at Freeview, described the numbers as a fantastic achievement, referring to the five years since the Freeview launch, though DTT itself has been available in the UK since the debut of the ill fated On Digital ten years ago. This week Freeview launched its first dedicated advertising campaign for the free-to-air proposition. - Source Broadband TV News |

Tension over Ofcom HD plans
|
| Added 26th November 2007 Ofcom has unveiled plans that would allow HD channels to be made available over DTT as early as 2009. The announcement comes less than 24 hours after the four major terrestrial broadcasters: the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Five announced their own plans to use DTT for new HD channels. The Ofcom plan, detailed in a new consultation and effectively leaked by the four PSBs, would take advantage of a 20% increase in DTT capacity created by a change in technical standards following the switchover process. Channels currently using the so-called Multiplex B would be moved to one of the five other multiplexes to allow room for the new HD channels. Broadcasters would be required to make the most efficient use of spectrum, and while viewers would be safeguarded, there would also be a move towards MPEG-4 and DVB-T2 for new services. - Source Broadband TV News |

BSkyB plans standalone broadband
|
| Added 10th September 2007 BSkyB is studying the launch of a standalone broadband product that would not require the subscriber to also take one of the broadcaster’s pay-TV packages. It is believed the product could launch under the Picnic Broadband brand, intensifying the competition with BT, Carphone Warehouse and Virgin Media, though BSkyB is not offering any comment on the plans. The ‘See, Speak, Surf’ promotion has been highly effective for BSkyB. Its own equipment has been installed in BT exchanges covering 70% of UK homes. As of June 30, 2007 716,000 subscribers are connected to BSkyB’s broadband service, 81% are on the BSkyB network, and 71% have opted for a pay package. BSkyB - Source Broadband TV News |
Sky Faces Irish EPG Rules
|
| Added 29th August 2007 The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) is pushing ahead with plans to regulate Electronic Programme Guides for multichannel broadcasters in the country. It means that providers including Sky Digital and UPC Ireland would be required to give priority to Irish broadcasters. In the Irish Republic, Sky gives priority to RTE 1,RTE 2,TV3 and TG4, which take the top positions that are occupied by the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 in the United Kingdom. The British stations appear lower down the guide for Irish viewers. Recently launched Dublin station Channel 6 is seeking a more prominent position in the guide. It is expected that Sky will argue that it should be regulated only by the UK’s Ofcom. However, if the BCI wins the day Sky could be forced to run a significantly different numbering scheme for Irish viewers. The BCI is expected to discuss its EPG proposals in October - Source Broadband TV News |

| Arsenal TV is one of a new batch of television services licensed by Ofcom in May. The North London football club will join Manchester United’s MUTV and Chelsea TV in offering a pay-TV channel for their fans. Also receiving a licence is Sky Sports HD 3. It follows the recent appearance of Sky Sports HD Xtra to cover the overlap of the football, cricket and rugby seasons. The channel subsequently closed. Another notable licensee is BET International, which has secured a licence for its BET (Black Entertainment Television) channel. Sparrowhawk Entertainment, which operates Hallmark Channel in Europe, has a new channel in Diva while Performance Channel adds Performance at the Movies. Eicom’s SciTech TV, the successor to Einstein TV, has also been given the right to broadcast. National Geographic Channel has been granted a licence for the Polish HD version of the channel, although it has been on air via the n DTH platform since last autumn. |

| Virgin Media has confirmed plans to launch a new linear TV channel. Known as Virgin 1, the new channel will screen a mix of commissioned and acquired programming including the now obligatory user generated content, and broadcast on a number of platforms. Virgin 1 will launch later this year on both the cablenet and the Freeview DTT platform. Virgin already has Freeview capacity for FTN, launched by predecessor Flextech Television, and broadcasting a mix of the original content from the broadcaster’s other channels including Bravo, Trouble and Living. The description could equally be applied to the new channel. It is not known whether Virgin 1 will be offered to BSkyB, following the very public spat over the carriage of Sky’s basic channels. |

Even so, this barely keeps up with the stocking requirements for the phenomenally successful new Paragon Components products for which SCC is the UK’s major distributor. In addition to and continuing the success of the SCC Distribution East depot in March, Cambridgeshire - and by popular demand - a new Trade Counter and Warehouse will be opened shortly in Norwich, serving customers and Paragon Components local Distributors in Norfolk and Suffolk. The BBC Trust has given a green light to Freesat, the planned free-to-air digital satellite TV service from the BBC and ITV. The corporation's regulatory body has confirmed a provisional decision it made in February to give the go-ahead. The BBC Trust had received 700 responses to consultation and said "an overwhelming majority of respondents, 93 per cent, considered that the BBC should be taking action to improve access to its digital services in the lead-up to digital switchover". But the approval does come with conditions, the Trust said Freesat would be required to show that other broadcasters who signed up to distribute TV and radio channels via the new satellite service were not being subsidised by the licence fee. In addition, Freeview should be kept "operationally separate from its involvement with Freesat to minimise any potential effect on competition". Freesat is expected to offer up to 300 TV and radio channels - compared with around 75 that are currently available through Freeview. It is due to launch by the time the Borders region switches off its analogue signal in 2008-2009 and will operate on a not-for-profit basis. The Trust said it hoped that other public service broadcasters will sign up to Freesat and will share the costs of the new joint venture. Both Sky and Virgin objected on the basis a publicly funded broadcaster would be impacting on a free market. However, the Trust said it decided to go ahead as it would "be of significant public value" for licence fee payers, by addressing "inadequate access to the BBC's digital services in the lead-up to switchover". It also pointed out: "BSkyB is under no regulatory obligation to provide subscription-free access and we think it reasonable to conclude that it does so as a commercial choice and therefore there was no guarantee it would remain a subscription-free route to access BBC services in the future as BSkyB could choose to withdraw or change the terms of this service. Freesat was first proposed in 2003 and then outlined formally by the BBC and ITV in September 2005, when it was envisaged it would launch in the first half of 2006.
